With the Act of March 3, 1849, Congress authorized the minting of an exciting new coin--the largest denomination of regular currency ever minted at the time--the Gold Double Eagle. Valued at $20, the Double Eagle contained an impressive .9675 ounces of pure gold and featured a Liberty Head design by James Longacre. During the first year of production, no pieceswere minted for circulation, but one pattern strike is known to exist, residing in the Smithsonian Institute.
