Product description
The Buffalo Nickel is one of the most distinctive coins ever created. Sometimes referred to as an “Indian Head” Nickel, it was first minted in 1913 and is one of the only coins in American history to have an image of a living being on both sides.
James Earle Fraser – a former assistant to famed sculptor and coin designer, Augustus Saint-Gaudens – was chosen to re-design the nickel. He created a unique design for the new coin featuring an accurate portrayal of a Native American on its obverse. The “buffalo” portrayed on the reverse was actually an American bison by the name of Black Diamond, who resided at the Bronx Zoo. This remarkable coin was considered a brilliant work of art for its truly American imagery.

In 1938, at the end of its 25-year lifecycle, this beautiful coin was replaced by the nickel bearing the likeness of President Thomas Jefferson. In recent years, Buffalo Nickels have become increasingly hard to find. Once plentiful, most of these historic coins have found their way into private collections or have been made into jewelry.

Now, you have the incredible opportunity to add a genuine 1917 Buffalo Nickel Archival Edition to your collection at an incredible price. Buffalo Nickels are becoming more and more difficult to find. American Mint has been able to acquire a limited supply of the 1917 edition of these magnificent coins and are making them available to specially selected collectors. It comes in our NumiShield Archival Case to preserve it for future generations. and includes a Certificate of Authenticity.
