The Double Eagle $20 gold piece is the largest U.S. gold coin ever produced for use in daily circulation. The first Double Eagle was minted in 1849, the year after gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in California. The coin was authorized by Congress as a way to use the large supplies of gold flowing into commerce from California. Each Double Eagle coin contained nearly one full ounce of gold.
Designed by world-renowned sculptor and Chief Engraver James Barton Longacre, the coin features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty on the obverse and a heraldic eagle clutching a double scroll on the reverse. - Details
