The 1986 Statue of Liberty Half Dollar honors the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty on Bedloe's Island. Featuring Lady Liberty in high relief in the foreground, this tribute serves as a great reminder of America's most cherished symbol of freedom.
In 1986, to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Statue of Liberty, Congress authorized the creation and minting of a special half dollar honoring Lady Liberty and Ellis Island. Part of the original purchase price of each coin was used to restore the Statue and Ellis Island, and to create an endowment for the future maintenance of these beloved national monuments.
