The Battle of Normandy Commemorative Color Coin

The Battle of Normandy, code-named Operation Overlord, was the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied France during World War II. Commonly referred to as D-Day, the invasion began on June 6, 1944, and isconsidered one of the most important events in modern history. It remains the largest seaborne invasion in the annals of warfare. More than 156,000 troops from Britain, Canada, and the United States-- under the command of Lieutenant General Omar Bradley -- crossed the English Channel and landed on the beaches of Normandy. When Allied forces stormed the heavily fortified shores and completely overwhelmed the German defenses, it marked the beginning of the end of the World War II in Europe.
