Sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi chose the location for the monument after seeing Liberty Island as he sailed into New York Harbor and realized that his statue would always have an audience there. Given to the U.S. as a symbol of international friendship from France, she has served as inspiration to millions of immigrants. 2011 marked the 125th year of the unveiling of Lady Liberty.
