Born in 1910, Agnesë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu went on to become a Roman Catholic nun in 1937. Known to the world as Mother Teresa, she founded the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India, in 1950. For over 45 years she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying - first throughout poverty-stricken India and then throughout the world. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her tireless work on behalf of the poor. Following her death in 1997, she was beatified by Pope John Paul II. On September 4, 2016, she was made a Saint by Pope Francis.
