This 5-cent coin, issued by the U.S. Mint between 1913 and 1938, is known as the Buffalo nickel, Bison nickel, or the Indian Head nickel. Designed by James E. Fraser, the profile on the obverse ofthe coin was compiled from the heads of three Native Americans that President Roosevelt is said to have visited. An American Bison is pictured on the reverse, patterned after Black Diamond, a bison that lived in the New York Central Zoo.
