In 1859, Abraham Lincoln spoke of a dangerous trend in American politics that sought to restrict vital aspects of freedom and equality for African Americans. Although his presidency and the Civil Warwould not occur for another two years, Lincoln was already displeased with the virulent spread of slavery throughout the United States and cautioned against continued inequalities, declaring that "hewho would be no slave, must consent to have no slave."
