Despite his humble origins, Abraham Lincoln led an illustrious life and became one of our nation's most respected Presidents.
In 1830, Lincoln moved from Kentucky to Illinois where he practiced law and served in the state legislature. Later, he was elected to represent Illinois in the United States House of Representatives. His election in 1860 was quickly followed by the secession of the Confederate States of America and the start of the Civil War. When Lincoln was reelected in 1864, he spoke of peace and the ending of the nation's sectional differences. One month later, the Civil War ended when Robert E. Lee surrendered his Confederate Army to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. On April 14, 1865, just one week after the war ended, Abraham Lincoln was shot while attending a play at Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C. He died early the next morning and became a legend, gaining a place among the nation's most revered heroes.
