1916 Standing Liberty Quarter Dollar Replica
In 1916, a national competition was held to design a new quarter that would represent the nation's growing interest in its own protection. Hermon Atkins MacNeil's "Standing Liberty” design was chosen. His art nouveau-inspired creation featured Lady Liberty . . . her flowing gown falling from her shoulder, leaving her right breast exposed. In her left hand is a shield, representing her readiness todefend, and in her right, an olive branch symbolizing a desire for peace. The coin was a magnificent work of classic Greek design that was praised for its beauty, even as it was being condemned as "obscene” for Liberty's bare breast. By 1917, political pressure from religious leaders forced a redesign to cover up the exposure with a chain mail suit of armour. With only 52,000 produced, 1916 "Standing Liberty Type I” Quarters - with an exposed Lady Liberty - have become very difficult to find and, depending on the condition, can sell for tens of thousands of dollars. Now you can add a silver-plated replica of this historic coin to your collection. Available exclusively from American Mint, this exquisite replica is luxuriously plated in .999 pure silver and features a highly detailed engraving of Hermon A. MacNeil's controversial "bare-breasted” Lady Liberty.
