Now you have the opportunity to own an extraordinary 24k gold-layered trial of a new dollar coin featuring the exquisite eagle design found on the reverse of the very first $20 gold piece ever struck. The U.S. Mint produced only one gold double eagle in 1849 to be presented as a pattern coin for future gold double eagles. That sole existing specimen now resides in the Smithsonian Institution and is estimated to be worth $10 to $20 million.
Designed by James B. Longacre, the Liberty Head Double Eagle features a left facing Liberty, her hair bundled and secured with a beaded tie, with a few loose curls cascading down her neck. She is encircled by thirteen six-point stars. On the reverse, a left-facing heraldic eagle appears, wings outstretched with a shield, a bundle of arrows, and an olive branch in its talons. The sole piece minted in 1849 resides at the Smithsonian Institution.
