The Greatest Warship in the Age of Sails
On May 7, 1765, the HMS Victory was officially launched from England`s Royal Dockyard. The 227'- long, 104-gun warship went on to become the most famous ship in the history of the Royal Navy. She is the only ship to fight in the American War of Independence, the French Revolutionary War, and the Napoleonic War.

Victory’s most famous battle was at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Under the command of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, the HMS Victory led the fleet against the combined French and Spanish fleet. After the cannon fire ended, the French and Spanish had lost an incredible 22 ships while every ship of the Royal Navy survived. Unfortunately, Nelson was shot at the height of the battle and died aboard the Victory moments after receiving news of the historic triumph.

In 1808, the HMS Victory was recommissioned to lead the fleet, but four years later she was relegated to harbor service — serving as a flagship and as a residence ship. The HMS Victory was placed in permanent dry dock in 1922, where she remains today — still a commissioned ship of the Royal Navy. The oldest commissioned warship in the world, the HMS Victory recently celebrated its landmark 250th Anniversary.
