In 1848, James Marshall was building a saw mill for John Sutter on the American River near
Sacramento, California. On the morning of January 24, Marshall found a few tiny
gold nuggets in a nearby stream.
News of the discovery spread quickly and set off one of the largest human migrations in history,
as a half-million people from around the world descended upon California in search of instant
wealth. The California Gold Rush did far more than make people rich - it led to our
countrys western expansion.
As the gold flowed, the U.S. Mint and private mints produced gold coins to monetize the precious
metal.
