Specially Minted to Help Save and Preserve the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
In 1986, Congress authorized the minting of a special half dollar coin to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Statue of Liberty. Part of the original coin`s $7.50 purchase price was used to restore the Statue and Ellis Island, and to create an endowment for the future maintenance of these beloved national monuments. This legal tender coin’s design honors Lady Liberty as our nation`s greatest symbol of freedom and commemorates the millions of immigrants who entered America through Ellis Island. By law, these coins were minted for only one year and in limited numbers. After production ended the dies were destroyed, guaranteeing that they will not be minted again.
