The American Eagle and One of Our Nation`s Greatest Coins
The discovery of gold in California on January 24, 1848, set off a chain of events that forever changed our nation. In 1849, Congress authorized the production of a new, larger gold coin as a way of monetizing its newfound stockpiles of gold. To design the new coin, the Mint turned to its chief engraver, world-renowned sculptor James Barton Longacre. His classic design featured a Grecian-inspired Miss Liberty bust, her head of thick, tight curls gracefully adorned with a coronet inscribed with the word "LIBERTY." The bust was surrounded by stars, with the date below. The reverse had a decidedly patriotic theme: the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" boldly displayed above a majestically posed eagle. Protected by an American shield and flanked by an ornate banner reading "E PLURIBUS UNUM," the eagle had rays emanating from his wings and a halo of stars. The denomination abbreviated as "TWENTY D." completed the bottom of the coin.
Official production was set to begin at the U.S. Mint`s Philadelphia facility in 1850. In preparation for full production, the U.S. Mint produced two pattern coins dated 1849. These proofs were never meant for circulation, so the first coin was placed in the vault. The other was presented as a gift to the Secretary of the Treasury, William Meredith. After Merediths death, that second coin was sold and then disappeared, making the coin stored away the only 1849 Liberty Head Double Eagle known to exist!
That sole surviving coin is unquestionably the rarest coin in American history and now resides in the Smithsonian Institution. As part of the National Coin Collection, it can`t legally be sold, so it is considered priceless. However, experts estimate the value of this only known 1849 Liberty Head Double Eagle to be at least $22.5 Million!
