The special forces team that ended Osama Bin Laden’s reign of terror is an elite counter-terrorism group unofficially known as SEAL Team Six.

Officially, the team’s name is Naval Special Warfare Development Group or "DEVGRU." SEAL Team Six is an ultra-classified unit containing the absolute best-of-the-best from the Navy SEALS.

SEAL Team Six was developed after the failed 1980 attempt to rescue American hostages held in Iran showed the need for a dedicated counter-terrorist team capable of operating with the utmost secrecy.

Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, then-President George Bush made finding al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden the nation`s as SEAL Team Six relayed a short message to President Barack Obama: "Geronimo EKIA." Geronimo was the code name for bin Laden and EKIA signified Enemy Killed In Action. This simple message signaled to the Commander-in-Chief that the enemy leader`s reign of terror had come to an end. Justice had been done.

It is standard procedure never to identify members of SEAL Team Six. But as President Obama said after their successful mission, "We may not always know their names, we may not always know their stories, but they are there every day on the front lines of freedom and we are truly blessed."
