The Legend of the 1933 Gold Double Eagle
In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt decided that American currency lacked artistic merit and needed to be redesigned. As an admirer of the master sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Roosevelt commissioned him to revamp our nation`s gold coins to better represent Americas emergence as a world power.
Saint-Gaudens created the Gold Double Eagle in 1907. It was a magnificent work of art that has been called the most beautiful American coin ever created. However, it was not until 1933 that the $20 gold coin would reach mythical status.
In 1933, with America caught in the grip of the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt made private ownership of gold illegal. The government confiscated all Gold Double Eagles minted that year and melted them down into plain gold bars. Only a few coins escaped this fate. Two were sent to the Smithsonian, while a handful were secreted away by a Mint employee. One-by-one, federal agents were able to locate — and confiscate — most of the coins. However, one resurfaced in 1944 as part of an Egyptian king`s coin collection, but political considerations prevented the Secret Service from claiming it. After the king`s death, the coin became the subject of a decades-long battle over legal ownership. In 2002, it sold at auction for a then-record $7.59 Million. In June 2021, the coin made history again when it sold for an unbelievable $18.87 Million, once again making it the most expensive coin in history.
