The Pledge of Allegiance
First published in The Youth`s Companion in 1892, the Pledge of Allegiance was composed by Reverend Francis Bellamy as a way to promote national pride. Bellamy believed that patriotism should be instilled at a young age, so along with the pledge, he sold American flags to schools across the country, distributing more than 25,000 flags in the first year alone.
Thanks to Bellamys efforts, generations of children around the country have learned to start each day by standing before the American flag with their hands over their hearts. A promise of loyalty to our flag and our nation, the Pledge of Allegiance continues to be a vital example of patriotism that upholds the American ideal of freedom ". . . with liberty and justice for all."
