VICTORY IN EUROPE — WORLD WAR II
World War II began with the German invasion of Poland in 1939. For the next 3 years, German forces rampaged across the European continent leaving destruction and devastation in their path. In 1941, the United States was forced into the war and everything changed. The successful 1944 D-Day invasion on the French beaches of Normandy allowed for Allied troops and supplies to flood into the continent. With English and American forces advancing from the west and Russia`s Red Army pushing hard from the east, Germany suddenly felt squeezed in an ever-tightening vise. By March of 1945, both fronts began their march on Berlin while strategic bombing campaigns pounded Germany, sometimes destroying entire cities in a single night. Germany put up a fierce defense, but they continued to give up ground under the overwhelming attacks that seemed to come from all sides. In April, American forces had pushed through the German defensive lines and Russia began its attack on the German capital of Berlin. Ammunition was running out and food supplies had dwindled; suddenly the once great Nazi Empire was collapsing. With all hope of victory gone, Adolf Hitler committed suicide on April 30th and the Third Reich was defeated.
After a week of unsuccessful negotiations, German officials signed an unconditional surrender on May 7, 1945, with the terms taking effect on May 8. As word spread that the war in Europe was over, celebrations spontaneously erupted all over the world. In spite of the victory in Europe, fighting continued in the Pacific. It would take another 4 months for the war to officially end, when Japan finally surrendered to Allied forces on September 2, 1945.
Victory in Europe Day — or V-E Day — is celebrated every year on May 8th.
