The summer of 1776 was a defining time for the British colonies in America. Unfair taxation and intolerable acts of oppression at the hand of the English monarch, King George III, had led to increased clashes with the British forces. The fuse of revolution was lit.

During this tense and uncertain time, the Continental Congress met at Independence Hall in Philadelphia to act on Richard Henry Lee`s motion to declare independence from England. In preparation for this vote, the Congress selected a committee to draft a declaration of independence. The committee, composed of John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert R. Livingston, and Roger Sherman, chose Jefferson to write the document because he was considered the most eloquent writer.

Jefferson began his work in seclusion on June 11, 1776, and after a series of revisions by the committee, submitted the document to the Continental Congress on June 28. On July 4th, the Declaration of Independence announced to the King and the world that the colonies were now free and independent states. The United States of America was born.

To this day, Jefferson`s powerful message of freedom is considered the benchmark of democracy worldwide.
