Launched on April 11, 1970, Apollo 13 was supposed to be the third lunar landing of the Apollo program, but an oxygen tank in the service module failed after two days, causing the mission to be aborted. Instead, astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise were forced to use the lunar module as a lifeboat as systems crashed and the ship ran out of oxygen. After a harrowing journey, the men safely returned home to a heroes' welcome on April 17.
