The U.S. Government rejected the legitimacy of the Confederacy and, on April 12, 1861, Confederate soldiers opened fire on Fort Sumter, marking the beginning of a long and brutal Civil War. For 4 years, brothers fought against brothers, friends against friends, and the nation - less than 100 years old - was torn apart by bloody conflict. While Union forces were better funded and had nearly twice the number of men, they often found themselves overwhelmed by the tenacity of the Rebels. Under the leadership of some of the greatest generals of their time, such as Robert E. Lee, J.E.B. Stuart, and Stonewall Jackson, the Confederates won many important battles and very nearly succeeded in their war against the Union. Ultimately, however, dwindling resources made continued success nearly impossible, and on April 9, 1865, Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House to end the Civil War.
