America`s Greatest President
The son of a Kentucky Frontiersman, Abraham Lincoln struggled most of his early life to earn a living and to quench his thirst for knowledge. This same determination helped him to guide the country through its most dire times. When Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1861, the dark clouds of the Civil War were already gathering. Despite several desperate attempts to hold the country together, seven southern states seceded from the Union to form the Confederate States of America. Four more southern states joined the Confederacy after the first shots of war were fired at Fort Sumter. The Civil War pitted American against American and, in some cases, brother against brother. Four brutal years of conflict – marked by fierce battles, incredible acts of bravery, and great leadership – ended in 1865 when the Confederacy surrendered to Union forces at Appomattox. Through it all, Lincoln led the nation with integrity and determination, emancipating the slaves and ultimately securing victory in the North. Assassinated just six days after the end of the Civil War, Lincoln is remembered as our nation`s greatest President.
Presidential Dollars
To honor the lives and legacies of the men who have served our country as President, Congress passed the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005. This act commissions the U.S. Mint to create a series of coins featuring the Presidents in the order that they served. These coins will be released into circulation beginning with Washington, Adams, Jefferson, and Madison, and will only be minted for one year. The Mint will release the next four coins in the series on Presidents Day each year.
Capitalizing on the success of the State Quarter Series, Congress hopes to revitalize circulated U.S. coins as an object of beauty and collectable value. Based on the official Presidential portraits, the Presidential $1 coins feature large, dramatic artwork in a glistening golden hue. Their most unique feature is the incused, or stamped in, edge inscriptions: "E Pluribus Unum," the year of minting, and "In God We Trust." The reverse of the coins features a striking rendition of the Statue of Liberty.
Although the Presidential Dollars were very popular among collectors, it was decided that, due to budgetary restraints, production of future Presidential Dollars will be limited. Beginning with Chester A. Arthur in the spring of 2012, only collectors willing to pay a premium above face value are able to purchase the U.S. Mint`s Presidential Dollars for their collection.
