In 1969, Dwight D. Eisenhower – legendary five-star General and the 34th President of the United States – died four months shy of witnessing the single greatest achievement in human history: a man walking on the moon. Legislation was introduced in Congress calling for a dollar coin that would both honor the late President and celebrate the success of Apollo 11`s moon landing. Designed by Chief Engraver Frank Gasparro, the Eisenhower Dollar was the first dollar coin minted in 41 years. The coin`s subject matter made it an instant hit. However, its large size made it hard to use, so minting of this historic coin lasted only seven years – from 1971-1978.
