The Rich Tradition of the American Eagle Appearing on U.S. Coins
The Bald Eagle has long been a symbol of strength and integrity. Its image appeared on Colonial coinage even before the United States was founded.
Then, within a few years of America formally becoming a nation, Congress adopted the Great Seal of the United States on June 20, 1782. The Bald Eagle at the center of the seal inspired Congress to officially name it our National Symbol in 1789.
As a national symbol, the Eagle became an even more important part of American coinage, starting with the very first pattern coin struck at the U.S. Mint when it first opened in 1792. Today, the tradition continues with the Bald Eagle being by far the most common imagery found on U.S. coins.
