When the historic California gold rush began in 1848, the U.S. government suddenly had a huge influx of newly mined gold reserves. But what were they going to do with all that gold?
Three words: Gold Double Eagle.
With the Act of March 3, 1849, Congress authorized the minting of an exciting new coin--the largest denomination of regular currency ever minted at the time--the Gold Double Eagle. Valued at $20, the Double Eagle contained an impressive .9675 ounces of pure gold and featured a Liberty Head design by James Longacre. During the first year of production, no pieces were minted for circulation, but one pattern strike is known to exist, residing in the Smithsonian Institute.
As a rare piece of American history, the 1849 Liberty Head Double Eagle is considered priceless, but some experts estimate its value at between $10 and $20 million!
