"It is through this mysterious power that we have too have our being, and we therefore yield to our neighbors, the same right as ourselves to inhabit this vast land."
Tatánka Íyotake (ChiefSitting Bull)
Sitting Bull was a political, military and spiritual leader of the Sioux tribe in the 1860s when U.S. troops tried to move the native tribes west into reservations. On June 25, 1876, Tatanka Iyotanka - as he was known in his native tongue - led thousands of warriors from different tribes to an overwhelming victory over General George Armstrong Custer and his troops at theBattle of Little Big Horn. Years later, Sitting Bull became world-famous as a main attraction in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. The aging chief later left the show to resume leadership of his people in South Dakota. Sitting Bull died in 1890 from a gunshot wound he suffered during a clash between tribe members and tribal police who were sent to arrest him.
