The very basis of America's economic system, the penny was first introduced in 1787. In 1909, Congress broke from tradition to honor President Abraham Lincoln's 100th birthday by putting his portraiton the penny. It was the first time the portrait of a real person was used on an American coin. The penny's reverse has evolved over the decades in celebration of Lincoln's anniversaries, but his portrait on the obverse has remained unchanged in honor of our nation's greatest President and his place in American history.
The Lincoln Penny was first issued in 1909, to commemorate Abraham Lincoln's 100th birthday. It was the first American coin to bear a president's image on its obverse. Also known as the "wheat penny," this design, minted until 1958, features two stylized wheat stalks on itsreverse. The coin was designed by Victor David Brenner, whose initials were on the reverse until public controversy forced their removal. In 1918, they were minimized and moved to the obverse, below Lincoln's shoulder.
