Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commemorative Inlay Coin
More than two hundred years ago, President Thomas Jefferson and Congress authorized the funding of a mission to explore the uncharted American West. In 1804, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark embarked on a journey to find an overland route to the Pacific Ocean. They traveled thousands of miles, moving up the Missouri River, through present-day North Dakota and Montana, and over the Continental Divide to the mouth of the Columbia River before returning to St. Louis in 1806.
Authorized by the National Council of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial, this unique coin bears the official logo of the National Lewis and Clark Bicentennial on its obverse. The coin´s reverse features a genuine 14-kt. gold Indian Head Buffalo Nickel minted by the United States Mint between 1913 and 1938.
