When Fraser was creating his masterpiece in 1912, he wanted to design a cointhat could not be mistaken for currency from any other country, so he insisted on using images that were unmistakably American. Raised in the Midwest, Fraser drew his inspiration from the American Plains of his childhood. His creation featured the all-American imagery of a Native American chief on the obverse and an American Bison on the reverse. The Buffalo Nickel - and subsequently the AmericanGold Buffalo - prove that Fraser's vision perfectly captured the spirit of the American West.
