Minted only in 1892 and 1893, the Columbian Exposition Half Dollar was the very first half dollar coin ever minted by the U.S. Government to commemorate an event. Authorized for sale only at the World's Columbian Exposition to honor the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' discovery of the New World, these .900 pure silver coins were extremely popular and ended up in general circulation after the expo ended.
