2016 $100 Platinum Eagle Replica Coin

On the 20th Anniversary of the American Platinum Eagle program, the U.S. Mint issued the 2016 edition of the popular $100 bullion coin. As with all previous Platinum Eagles, the obverse featured John Mercanti's Statue of Liberty and the reverse was created exclusively for that mintage. 2016 was the last year of a special 2-year "Torches of Liberty" reverse design series. In this beautiful design, the stunning image of a young, graceful Liberty is wrapped in a flowing robe. She is holding a torch in her right hand to symbolize enlightenment and an olivebranch in her left hand to symbolize peace. The branch contains thirteen olives to represent the original thirteen colonies. A bald eagle in full flight appears in the background.

The 2015 Platinum Eagle - which was the first inthis special series - had an original mintage of 4,000 coins and they sold out in 10 minutes. For the 2016 edition, the Mint increased production to 10,000 coins. Despite the significantly higher mintage and a limitation of only one coin per household, they still sold out in 56 minutes.

Minted in .9995 (99.95%) pure platinum, the coin was originally produced in four sizes and denominations: $10 (1/10 oz.), $25 (1/4 oz.), $50 (1/2 oz.), and $100 (1 oz.). This gave collectors and investors options on how much they wish to spend to add platinum to their portfolio. That ended in 2009, when production ceased on the smaller denominations due to a lack of platinum blanks. Since then, only the largest and most expensive 1 oz. coins have been minted. The 1 oz. $100 Platinum Eagle remainsthe highest denomination of any coin in American history.

The obverse design of this historic bullion coin features a portrait of the Statue of Liberty that was designed by John Mercanti. The inscription "Liberty" appears above her head, with the date and "In God We Trust" below. "E Pluribus Unum" is incused along the left side of the coin. Adding to its uniqueness among American coins, the Platinum Eagle has a different reverse design every year. American Eagle Platinum Bullion Coins are the only platinum coins in the world whose weight, content, and purity are guaranteed by the U.S. Government.
