1986 Statue of Liberty Silver Half Dollar

Arguably America's most iconic symbol of freedom, the Statue of Liberty was presented as a gift to the U.S. from France in 1886. The statue was typically the first thing immigrants saw as they approached New York City by ship, dreaming of the possibilities of beginning a new, more prosperous life in the United States. She remains a symbol of inspiration to immigrants today.

Designed by the noted French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and constructed under the guidance of Alexandre Gustave Eiffel — who also built the Eiffel Tower in Paris just three years later — the Statue ofLiberty features the figure of a robed woman depicting Libertus, the Roman goddess of freedom. The highlight of the breathtaking sculpture is the torch that Lady Liberty is lifted toward the heavens to symbolize freedom.

The 1986 Liberty Silver Dollar Celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the Statue of Liberty
In 1986, to mark the 100th Anniversary of the Statue of Liberty, Congress authorized the creation and minting of a special half dollar honoring Lady Liberty and Ellis Island. Part of the original purchase price of each coin was used to restore the Statue and Ellis Island, and to create an endowment for the future maintenance of these cherished national monuments.

American Mint is proud to offer this beautiful authentic U.S. half dollar, a "must-have" piece for novice collectors and anyone who appreciates the Statue of Liberty's meaning and legacy.

Exquisitely minted from pure .900 silver this proof-quality piece features a stunning depiction of Lady Liberty with her torch in hand, majestically set against Ellis Island in the background. The coin's reverse depicts Liberty's torch surrounded by the famous quote that adorns her pedestal:"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free."
