1849 Double Eagle Dollar Trial

In January 1848, an American carpenter and sawmill operator named James W. Marshall struck gold in Coloma, CA, on a mill owned by John Sutter. News of Marshall's discovery spread quickly, and it wasn't long before Sutter's property was inundated with prospectors seeking their fortune. The result was the legendary "California Gold Rush," which saw more than 300,000 people from across the U.S. and overseas swarm the region over a seven-year period.

The Gold Rush had a profound impact on the U.S. economy. In 1849, Congress authorized the production of gold dollars and the so-called "double eagle," a $20 piece minted from 90% gold. Full-scale production of the double eagle began in 1950 and continued until 1907. A redesigned double eagle was issued from 1907 through 1933.

Created by James B. Longacre, the 1849 Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle featured a majestically posed eagle protected by an American shield and flanked by an ornate banner reading "E Pluribus Unum." The U.S. Mint produced only one of Longacre's creation to be presented as a pattern coin for future gold double eagles. That single existing specimen now resides in the Smithsonian Institution and is estimated to be worth $10 to $20 million. This historic coin serves as inspiration for our newest dollar trial.
