Product description
In 1934, the U.S. Treasury introduced a banknote whose face value surpassed the lifetime earnings of the typical American worker. Printed from December 18, 1934 through January 9, 1935, the One Hundred Thousand-Dollar Gold Certificate was not created as actual currency. It was a banknote issued to Federal Reserve Banks to be used in exchange for gold bullion held by the Treasury Department and was not circulated among the general public. Since they were used exclusively between government agencies, only 42,000 of these certificates were ever printed.
The certificate featured a portrait ofWoodrowWilson, 28th President of the U.S. and creator of the Federal Reserve System, on the obverse. Like all previous gold certificates, the reverse was printed in vibrant orange adorned with abstract scrollwork and intricate detail to thwart counterfeiters. Use of this and all other highdenomination bills was officially halted in 1969, by executive order of President Richard Nixon, in an effort to combat the use of cash in organized crime and other unlawful activities.

Today, only three original certificates exist and those are kept under tight security at select museums.

28th U.S. President Woodrow Wilson served from 1913 to 1921. His portrait appeared on the $100,000 gold certificate that once circulated in the United States. It was not meant for regular circulation; rather, it was used only for transactions between the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department. Of the 42,000 pieces that were produced, only three exist today.
