The 1986 $1 Statue of Liberty coin was issued to commemorate the statue, serving as the "Gateway to America" on Ellis Island.
In 1986, to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Statue of Liberty, Congress authorized the creation and minting of a special half dollar honoring Lady Liberty and Ellis Island. Part of the original purchase price of each coin was used to restore the Statue and Ellis Island, and to create an endowment for the future maintenance of these beloved national monuments.
Arguably America's most iconic symbol of freedom, the Statue of Liberty was presented as a gift to the U.S. from France. She still remains a symbol of inspiration to immigrants today. - Details
