Robert E. Lee Bowie Knife
When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Robert E. Lee joined the Confederate's efforts after graduating second in his class from West Point. In 1862, Lee became the Confederate's commander. Over the next three years, he unexpectedly led the Confederate forces to a series of victories over the better-organized Union Army. Finally, Lee was defeated at the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg, and surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant on April 09, 1865, effectively ending the war. Driven by duty and guided by honor, Robert E. Lee achieved legendary status as a true hero of the Confederate South during the Civil War. His dazzling military maneuvers brought about many victories for the outmanned Confederate Army before succumbing to Union forces at Appomattox in 1865. Even in defeat, Lee servedas a symbol of courage and dignity, embodying the finest elements of a true Southern gentleman. After the war, Lee set aside all animosity and urged the people of the South to work for the restoration of peace and harmony in a united country.
