It is our interpretation of what the dollar coins would look like if they featured classic images of Lady Liberty from beloved U.S. coins of the past. This trial coin features Lady Liberty from Augustus Saint Gaudens' gold Double Eagle design, considered by many experts to be the most beautiful coin ever created.

When President Teddy Roosevelt commissioned Augustus Saint Gaudens to redesign American coinage, the world renowned sculptor was 57 and in failing health. Saint Gaudens immediately began work on America's two largest gold denominations, the $20 double eagle and $10 eagle coins. His masterpiece, the $20 Gold Double Eagle has been called the most beautiful coin ever created and featured a stunning Lady Liberty holding a lit torch to symbolize the nation's ongoing search for enlightenment. Unfortunately, Saint Gaudens did not live to see his creation make it to production; he died in 1907, just before official minting was to begin.
