Liberty Head Double Eagle Commemorative Coin

Majestic and noble, the Bald Eagle has been considered the national bird for the United States of America since Congress first chose its image for the Great Seal of the United States in 1782. Appearing frequently on flags and emblems used by the government, the Bald Eagle has also been featured on many historic U.S. coins.

One of the most notable coins to have an eagle on it was the 1849 Gold Double Eagle. The first gold double eagle ever minted, it was designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, and its heraldic eagle on the reverse perfectly symbolized the strength of the young country. The "double eagle" moniker refers to the coin's $20 face value, which was twice that of the $10 eagle minted in 1795. The Double Eagle featured a composition consisting of 90 percent gold and 10 percent copper alloy.

The U.S. Congress authorized the minting of the Liberty Head Double Eagle in response to the 1848 California Gold Rush. News of the discovery of gold at Sutter'sMill in Coloma, CA, resulted in the inundation of more than 300,000 people from across the U.S. and around the world hoping to stake their claim. The infusion of gold into the money supply and the population boom resulting from the mass influx of the so-called "forty-niners" provided a much-needed boost to the economy and compelled Congress to sanction the production of the new gold coin.

The first minting of the Double Eagle gold coin in 1849 consisted of two "proof" pieces: one was presented to U.S. Treasury Secretary William M. Meredith and eventually disappeared. The other is nowon display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Regular production of the Double Eagle gold coin commenced in 1850 and continued until 1933.
