At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, the newly established Confederate government began to print its own money as legal tender to the citizens of the South. Almost every Confederate note was painstakingly hand signed and numbered, with uneven borders since scissors were used to cut the sheets of banknotes apart. Beautifully rendered and rich in color, the $50 banknote depicts Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederate States of America. Today, as our nation commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, they have become a highly sought-after piece of our nation's history.
Meticulously designed by American Mint – in conjunction with The National Civil War Museum – for the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War, this remarkable coin features a fullcolor reproduction of the Confederacy’s $50 Jefferson Davis banknote.
