It was political pressure, not public demand, that brought the treasured Morgan Silver Dollar into existence after heavy lobbying from the silver mining industry. Designed by legendary engraver George T. Morgan, this beautiful silver dollar featured a youthful Lady Liberty on the obverse with a heraldic bald eagle grasping arrows and olive branches on the reverse. First struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1878, Morgan’s design was used until the first run stopped in 1904. Then in 1921, the Denver Mint was authorized to strike the Morgan Dollar for just one year. All told, production of the Morgan Silver Dollar spanned five decades, creating what is arguably the most beloved – and most collected – silver dollar in American history.
